About Saratov Unknown

The idea of this project was born spontaneously when I was thinking about possible uses for my web design and writing skills for the benefit of other people. Collecting both widely known (in Russia) and mostly unknown facts about my city in one place and writing them up both in English — for people outside Russia interested in knowing more about us — and in Russian, for my compatriots — looked like a good idea to me.

It was somewhat vague at first, but then, as I happens with any idea, it started acquiring discernible outlines and features — a bit of content today, a sketch of the future graphic design tomorrow. Day after day, a line of code after a line of code and a photo after a photo, I have built what is now Saratov Unknown – the site born to grow and develop, the site doomed to become popular one day — assuming I live long enough to fill it with all the facts lying in wait for it somewhere.

How many people know that Saratov was founded in 1590? A lot, I would guess. And how many people know that Barack Obama visited a couple of small towns near Saratov a few years before he was elected President of the USA? Not that many. Now you are starting to get the idea of what kind of facts this resource is dedicated to, and if you know of something that might interest me, please email me and tell me your story.

Schools and museums, wonderful people and tourist attractions — all this makes good material for Saratov Unknown and will over time find its place somewhere within the domain.

I don't know yet whether this website is ever going to acquire a forum or a blog — but if I decide to do so, you will be the first to know, my dear readers, I promise.
